Porn addiction: The way out

porn addiction
Why!! Why me!!
This is what
many youths, married single and children cry out when they realize that they
can’t just stay a day without paying a visit to the grandmasters of their mind.
To better understand the concept of
pornography addiction, we will first of all define it.

In my own words I will define pornography
addiction as

“ A condition whereby an individual has an uncontrollable strong urge (usually psychological) to deal and satisfy his or her
sexual urge by the means of watching a sex stimulating video footage or image
whenever the urge or feeling for sex is felt”

Porn or pornography addiction can also be
defined as a condition in which an individual has an uncontrollable relationship
and urge to pay a visit to explicit sexual materials. Porn can range from graphic
novels, magazines, videos, books, movies, to any other medium or source in
which sexual stimulating acts or images are explicitly shown.

consequences of porn addiction
Porn addiction is considered a behavioral
addiction that is known by a continuous growing compulsion to view a
pornographic content or material.

In addition to the use of internet some
various means, such as smart phones and social media cause porn addiction by
making available an outlet to view pornography anywhere and at any time.

These
outlets allow you to keep and view porn in very high numbers than ever before
while leaving very little or no physical evidence of your porn use.

 Several
studies that have been made estimate that global rates of consumption of porn
do range from 50% to 99% of men and 30% to 86% of women.

Like mind-altering substances, the addiction
to porn is due to the relationship between naturally occurring substances in
the brain and porn consumption.

Neurotransmitters can be said to be a substance
released in the brain that stimulate feelings of pleasure.

 When an individual
artificially over stimulates the release of these hormones through the use of alcohol,
sex, drugs, porn, or any other stimulus, the body tends to develop a tolerance and
expectation for those chemicals that cannot be met through normal daily activities
thus addicted individuals do continue to engage in unhealthy behaviors in order
to maintain the “high” that has been artificially achieved.

One major reason porn gets very addictive
to most individuals is that it appears to give a space for sexual gratification
in which the individual’s relational difficulties are not triggered.

For most users and addicts of porn they
refuse to admit to the fact and believe that the view of porn is wrecking their
mind. But when carefully observed and studied they tend to exhibit these common
behaviors and have similar feeling towards pornography.

Top reasons porn addicts give themselves and the bitter truth about porn addicton

porn addiction

 1. Oh
my God!! This feeling is unmanageable

Many addicts do confess that their
addiction has taken over their minds, bodies, and free will. When they feel the
urge to view pornographic content they believe that they cannot help themselves,
but to just satisfy the request of their grandmaster (porn).

Whether they realize it or not, porn
addicts struggle to place their trust in God, Instead of turning to God for
help, they rather prefer  to
self-medicate. This constant self-medicating strategies leads to addiction and
a life that is totally out of control–unmanageable.

2. Porn tends to create a neurochemical
tolerance

Watching pornography triggers several
neurochemical reactions in the brain. This is followed by a high feeling, which
is also followed with an orgasm. This high feeling is also experienced when
using certain drugs, such as cocaine or heroin.

3. It is degenerative and progressive.

Over time the want and addiction for
pornography gets worse. As tolerance and dependence for pornographic content
grow, the need for it grows. Instead of viewing soft porn he or she needs to
view more deviant, hardcore pornography that is violent and can even be
illegal.

Instead of spending a few minutes a week viewing pornography, he or
she now tends to be viewing it for several hours every day.

4. I feel very bad today.. I need to do
something about it

Most porn addicts do tend to use the term
“self-medicating.” As an excuse to continuous use of porn.  Addicts often use pornography as a “good”
strategy to relieve emotional pain.

Often they don’t even realize the pain is
still there. All they know do believe is that pornography do make them feel
very good and it will be a good thing that they must go back to it over and
over again, afterwards the when they realize the fact that they cannot feel  good without the use of pornography causes a
deep emotional wound that they are using pornography to heal their emotions.

5. I wanna reward myself for work well done

Pornography addicts do justify their
pornography use by viewing it as a reward for work well done. Maybe they have
been working hard in their career they discovered some stuff, got promoted or did
some good job around the house, they justify their use of pornography as a
reward for “a job well done.”

ADDICTION: THE WAY OUT

How to Overcome Porn Addiction?

Many individuals do go through recovery
stages to break away from porn addiction. Individual, group, and family therapy
as well as a number of other treatment modalities are used in treating porn
addiction.

As in the case of most addictions like
pornography addiction “withdrawal” symptoms do occur because the individual has
become used to a certain quantity of stimulation that they are no longer
experiencing. Unlike substance dependence, the withdrawal symptoms of
pornography addiction are not medically inherently life threatening.
Irritability, difficulty concentrating, relational difficulties,
self-medication with drugs or alcohol, depression, and anxiety are a few.

On the other hand, porn addicts are at a
very high risk of depression due to the guilt, shame, social isolation, relationship
failure, relational disruptions, and other devastating consequences that do come
with the acknowledgement of porn addiction. The potentially resulting
depression, anxiety, and isolation places these individuals at increased risk
for self-injurious behaviors, violence, and suicide.

Individuals addicted to
pornography often perceive difficulties asking for and seeking out professional
help because they fear the stigma of acknowledging their addiction and related
consequences.

They have very high chances of  receiving mixed messages from their spiritual
community, family, or culture that discourages them from acknowledging the
addiction to porn because it has been labeled as shameful, weak, or evil.

In
summary the best way to get away from addiction especially from porn addiction
is by eliminating every single source of such stimulants. Try to engage
yourself with physical activities and ask God for help cause he is the ultimate
source of help..
